CNN projects enough electoral college votes in favour of Joe Biden, with Pennsylvania confirmed as a win.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be the next President and Vice-President of the United States of America. It’s time to celebrate the victory of this strong and competent team who will take the reins of a superpower after four years of extreme racism, chauvinism, xenophobia, heightened economic inequality and a disastrous handling of all areas of economy, society and international affairs.

But as Trump leaves the White House, now more than ever we need to help and foster the growing unity across the broad coalition that has brought together people from all walks of life not only against Trump and Trumpism, but also in favour of change and decisive action to address social and economic inequalities, systemic racism and a pandemic that risks to ravage the US and the whole world if it’s not brought into check in the immediate future.

There is a lot of work to be done, and while we need to remain realistic about the progressive prospects of the new US government, it is time for positive and constructive pressure so that the progressive reforms that America and the world need will be finally put in place.

We cannot lose hope, and we need to remain pragmatic — learning from the same pragmatism of Biden himself and of the masses of US citizens who voted for him fully aware that their own legitimate interests aligned with the common good.

Let’s not forget that Trump has been defeated, but Trumpism has not. Right-wing populism and its dirty propaganda tactics are alive and well, and we will need all the intellectual and physical energies we can muster to defeat this nefarious project once and for all. Biden and Harris are one key element in this broader struggle for economic and racial justice, in America and in the world.
